“Hip Hopper since a toddler” are the famous Nas lyrics that best summarizes Glo Shines as an artist. As a student of Old Dominion University, she was first exposed to spoken word poetry through an open mic event called Etymology. Her writings skate the line between Hip Hop and Poetry merging into a hybrid with no need nor desire to be labeled.
She has featured nationally at Nicolas Bookstore in New York, Tuesday Verses in Washington, DC, and the renowned Apache Café in Atlanta, GA. She has also featured and hosted at several notable venues including the Chrysler Museum, the Harrison Opera House, The Kennedy Center, Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Downing Gross Community Center, The Norva, The Funny Bone and the Newsome House. She has performed for and worked with the public school systems of Norfolk, Hampton,and Newport News, Virginia and also worked with various charities including Parents against bullying, the Boys and Girls Club, and Teens with a Purpose.
She was the co-creator and host of the local radio show “The elements of Hip Hop”, a weekly forum that examined the origin and evolution of Hip Hop, by studying its five elements. She was also the host, co-founder, and creative director of Verses and Vibes a weekly spoken word event that ran for 5 years in the Hampton Roads Area! She takes great pride in being a host interacting with the artist and audience and offering the same type of forum that was once offered to her
In 2013, she released an album called “Glyphs and Graffiti”, which was an introduction of her evolution as an Emcee and poet. She has also had the extreme pleasure of opening for the legendary Dick Gregory. In 2017, Glo Shines released her 2nd studio album “What the Water Gave” along with two music videos. In 2019, Glo was brought on as a regular monthly host at the poetry landmark Busboys and poets. Currently Glo is a a 3rd project. Additionally, she is recording a bi-weekly vlog called ‘Glo’s Corner’.
Her next venture includes writing a lifestyle blog named LetzGlo, which covers a variety of topics and includes her written poetry and essays. Glo is also venturing into event planning and artist development to include writing, styling, executive producing, and coaching.Her goals are to continue to grow as a writer, host, and performer, and create art that educates, entertains and elevates! with a slight pinch of punk overall I feel like im pretty versatile with my sound.
Being a creator of multiple sorts, A’Jon finds her favorite passion in music through singing, songwriting and movement. Their lyrics embrace the essence of how life is lived through a non-binary lens. A’Jon manages to guide the audience and listeners visually by painting memories and relating to their messages and personal emotions she emotes through her poetry and singing. By performing with legends such as Kendrick Lamar, Bobby McFerrin and MumuFresh, they are ready to share their healing all over the globe to connect and leave a mark wherever they flow.
